Did You Know? You Might Walk Right Past Someone Who’s Visually Impaired—And Not Even Realize It!

April 1, 2025

It’s a surprising fact: fewer than 2% of people who are blind or visually impaired use a white cane. That means the vast majority navigate the world using other tools—like guide dogs—or no visible aids at all. You may have passed someone in the grocery store, on the sidewalk, or at work who lives with vision loss… and never even noticed.

At Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches, we see firsthand how vision loss affects people differently—and how important it is to raise awareness about invisible disabilities. Not every person with visual impairment “looks” blind. That’s why understanding and empathy are so vital.

A visually impaired woman walking confidently with her guide dog or a young student using accessible technology in class might not seem remarkable at first glance. But behind these moments are deep layers of strength, training, and community support. And often, behind that support is someone like you.

Why Awareness Matters

When people understand more about visual impairment, we create a more inclusive world. That could mean:

  • Offering assistance without assuming someone needs it.
  • Making sure websites, spaces, and signage are accessible.
  • Supporting organizations like Lighthouse that empower individuals with vision loss to live fully and independently.
