What Independence Looks Like After Vision Loss
When most people think about “independence,” they picture driving a car, managing a home, or navigating the world without assistance. But for those who are blind or visually impaired, independence looks a little different—it’s learning to walk confidently with a cane, reading with assistive technology, or cooking a meal without sight.
At Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches, we believe that vision loss should never limit someone’s ability to live a full, empowered life. That’s why we offer personalized support and programs for individuals at every stage—from infancy to adulthood.
Here’s what independence really looks like—and how Lighthouse helps make it possible.
The Children’s Program: A Brighter Start
Learning begins at birth—but for children with visual impairments, the world is experienced in unique ways. Parents often feel overwhelmed when they first learn of their child’s diagnosis. That’s where Lighthouse steps in.
Our Early Intervention Program (birth to age 6) offers developmentally appropriate services to help babies and toddlers gain essential skills. We also guide parents and caregivers on how to best support their child’s growth.
From ages 6 to 14, our Children’s Program combines education, mobility, and independent living training with fun activities and social interaction. Kids build friendships, gain confidence, and learn that their vision challenges do not define their future.
The Teen Program: Empowering the Next Generation
For teens navigating school, social pressures, and growing responsibilities, vision loss can feel isolating. Our Teen Program (ages 14 through high school graduation) prepares young people for life beyond the classroom.
We help teens build self-advocacy skills, explore career paths, and gain confidence in their ability to live independently. Whether it’s learning to navigate public transportation, using adaptive tech, or preparing for college or a job, we ensure teens are ready to take the next step in life—with courage and clarity.
The Adult Program: Skills for Life
Vision loss in adulthood—whether gradual or sudden—can be deeply disruptive. But it’s never too late to build or rebuild independence. Our Adult Program supports individuals of all ages with customized training to regain control over their lives.
Through orientation and mobility instruction, assistive technology training, daily living skills, and emotional support, adults learn how to manage their homes, careers, and health. Whether someone is recently diagnosed or has been blind for years, our services help them live healthy, happy, and productive lives.
