Helping Kids Shine: Lighthouse’s Early Intervention & Children’s Programs

Terri Shermett • June 25, 2025

At Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to explore, learn, and thrive—no matter their level of vision. That’s why we offer specialized programs designed to support visually impaired children from birth through age 14.

Whether a baby is born with blindness or a child develops a visual impairment early in life, the services we provide help ensure they are not left behind. Through our Early Intervention and Children’s Programs, we meet kids where they are—helping them gain independence, build confidence, and create lifelong connections.

Early Intervention: Birth to 6 Years Old

The world is a classroom, but for visually impaired infants and toddlers, learning doesn't happen the same way. From birth to age six, our Early Intervention Program provides critical developmental services tailored to how blind or visually impaired babies learn and grow.

Parents and caregivers often feel uncertain about how to support a child with vision loss. Our trained staff partners with families to help them understand how their child explores the world through touch, sound, and movement. Together, we build a foundation that supports the child’s growth and prepares them for a future full of possibilities.

We also offer free vision screenings for children aged 6 months to 6 years at local preschools, daycares, and community events. These screenings can detect early eye conditions—such as refractive errors or other visual impairments—that might otherwise go unnoticed until it's too late to correct. A five-minute screening can change a child’s life.

Early detection and treatment are vital. Delays in support can lead to permanent vision loss. If you know a child under six who hasn’t been screened, don’t wait.

Children’s Program: Ages 6 to 14

Our Children’s Program continues the journey for kids ages 6 to 14 across Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee counties. This year-round program incorporates education, recreation, and skill-building through interactive activities, camps, and outings.

From learning how to use assistive technology to navigating new environments independently, these children gain tools that empower them for the future. They practice:

  • Community exploration
  • Mobility and navigation skills
  • Independent living skills
  • Technology use
  • Career exploration

But just as importantly, they build confidence—and friendships that last a lifetime.

The Lighthouse creates a continuum of care that begins in early childhood and supports each child into adulthood. That long-term commitment makes a profound impact—not only on the children we serve but on their families and communities.
