Happier Than Before: How Mark Chapman Lost His Sight Overnight and Found a Life He Loves

Mark Chapman did not get a warning. There was no gradual decline, no slow fade, no time to prepare. He went to bed one night with his sight and woke up the next morning without it.

"One morning, I woke up to get ready for work and I couldn't see the clock," Mark recalls. "My vision had gone overnight, and I was just in shock."

His first thought was immediate and absolute: my life is over.

For anyone who has experienced sudden vision loss, that reaction is not unusual. One moment you are the person you have always been. The next, the most basic routines of your day feel impossible. Getting dressed. Making breakfast. Getting to work. Reading a text from your kids. Everything that was automatic now requires a completely different approach, and in the first hours and days, most people cannot imagine how that approach will ever come together.

Coming to the Lighthouse

Mark found the Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches, and it changed the trajectory of his story.

"They gave me the training that I needed to do all those things for myself that I thought I was never going to be able to do again," Mark says.

The Lighthouse's programs teach daily living skills, orientation and mobility, and assistive technology to people who are blind or visually impaired. For someone like Mark, who lost his vision with no preparation, that training was the bridge between the life he thought was over and the life that was waiting for him on the other side.

Hitting the Golf Ball

But Mark's story does not stop at learning to manage daily tasks. It goes somewhere no one, including Mark himself, expected.

He started taking golf lessons.

For months now, Mark has been on the course, learning to play a sport that most sighted people find difficult enough. And the moment he connected with the ball for the first time left him stunned.

"There was no one that was more surprised than I was when I hit that ball," he says, laughing. "It's just great. I enjoy it."

That detail matters. It is easy to frame stories about vision loss around the word "survival." Mark is not surviving. He is thriving. He is picking up new hobbies, surprising himself, and laughing about it. He is living a life that looks nothing like the one he feared was over that first morning.

Happier Than Before

Perhaps the most remarkable part of Mark's testimony is not what he lost but what he found.

"I'm having a wonderful time with my life now," Mark says. "And I'm even happier than I was when I could actually see."

That sentence deserves to sit with you for a moment. Happier than before. Not just coping. Not just managing. Happier.

When Mark talks to his children about everything he has been doing since losing his sight, their reaction tells the story.

"They're like, Dad, we can't believe you do all that stuff," he says. "And it just makes me proud that I kind of overcame this problem that just surprised me one morning."

"I really feel like the Lighthouse gave me back all those things that losing my vision took away."

On Monday, April 14, the Ibis Charities Foundation, Inc. held their annual awards breakfast in Palm Beach County, an event that brings together philanthropic leaders and community partners to invest in meaningful local work.

We were honored and humbled to be recognized. Foundation representatives presented our team members Elizabeth Prus and Nicole Isaacson with a $20,000 check to help fund our children's programs.

Our children's programs serve 550+ young people across Palm Beach County, providing year-round activities, mobility training, independent living skills, technology training and career exploration.

"Your Vision Can Be Open Even When Your Sight Is Closed": Gabriel's Story

On August 6th, 2021, Gabriel's life was torn apart in a single night.

His boyfriend had been keeping their relationship a secret from his family. When six of them broke into Gabriel's apartment, three of them held him down while the others beat him. The violence was so severe that when Gabriel woke up in a hospital bed, unable to move, he overheard a doctor say he had only a 10% chance of surviving.

He was airlifted to Minnesota for a series of surgeries to save what was left of his vision, including extensive work on his left eye. The road ahead was uncertain. The life he had known was gone.

But Gabriel was not gone. Not even close.

Finding The Lighthouse

After surviving what no one should ever have to endure, Gabriel connected with The Lighthouse. And the impact, in his own words, was "stupid incredible."

"This people has helped me achieve everything," Gabriel says in a recent video testimonial. "They fight for me like they were my mom."

For someone who had been through unimaginable trauma, that kind of unconditional support meant everything. The Lighthouse didn't just provide services. The team became family. They showed up for Gabriel the way family is supposed to show up: with consistency, belief, and relentless advocacy.

"I'm Still Pretty"

One of the most striking moments in Gabriel's testimony comes when he addresses the camera directly, referencing the visible scars on his face from the attack and the surgeries that followed.

"For you guys to see my face," he says, then pauses. "I'm still pretty. I'm still pretty, all right?"

It is a moment of defiance, humor, and self-love all at once. Gabriel refuses to be defined by what happened to him. He refuses to let violence or vision loss strip him of his identity. In a few words, he reclaims himself completely.

Blind, But Seeing More Clearly Than Ever

Gabriel lost his physical sight. But he will be the first to tell you that he now sees more than he ever has.

"I'm just physically blind," he says. "But trust me, what I can tell you is I have way much more vision. I see the world more clearly."

That clarity has given Gabriel a new sense of purpose. His goal is to start an agency that helps people discover The Lighthouse and organizations like it. He wants others to know that losing your sight is not the end of the world. That help exists. That there is a path forward.

"I want to make people aware that this place exists," Gabriel explains, "and that there is a possibility. That it's not the end of the world. And that your vision can be open even when your sight is closed."

Why Gabriel's Story Matters

Gabriel's experience sits at the intersection of multiple crises that too many people face in silence: hate-fueled violence, traumatic injury, sudden disability, and the long fight to rebuild a life from the ground up. His willingness to share his story publicly is an act of courage that serves a larger purpose.

Every year, thousands of people experience sudden vision loss due to trauma, illness, or injury. Many of them do not know where to turn. They do not know that organizations like The Lighthouse exist, offering rehabilitation, support, advocacy, and community. The Mountain Is Still There: How Niurka Walker Found Independence After Vision Loss

Niurka Walker remembers the exact date. March 11th, 2021. She and her husband had traveled to South Carolina to visit his daughter and help prepare for a party. That is when she noticed something was wrong.

Things did not look right. Simple tasks she had done a thousand times before suddenly felt impossible. Niurka had been diagnosed with myopia degenerative disease ten years earlier, so the possibility of vision loss had always been somewhere in the back of her mind. But knowing something might happen and having it actually happen are two very different things.

The Last Day Behind the Wheel

Back home, Niurka tried to push through. But her supervisor at work saw what she could not bring herself to admit. "If you don't call the eye doctor now, I'm going to call him myself and take you myself," the supervisor told her. So Niurka put on what she calls her "big girl pants" and drove herself to the appointment.

That drive turned out to be her last. March 11th, 2021 was the final day Niurka worked at her job and the final day she drove a car. In one appointment, the life she had built around her independence was gone.

A New Kind of Independence

That is when Niurka found the Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches.

Through the Lighthouse's assistive technology program, Niurka learned to use tools like JAWS and Fusion, screen reading software that opened up the digital world she thought she had lost. The training did more than teach her how to use a computer without sight. It gave her a realization that changed everything.

"It gave me that boost," Niurka says. "I'm like, wait a minute, I can go back to school."

And that is exactly what she did. Niurka enrolled at Southeastern University, where she is now a college student. For someone who lost her ability to work and drive in a single day, the decision to go back to school was not just an academic one. It was a declaration that vision loss would not define the boundaries of her life.

Independence and Giving Back

When Niurka talks about what the Lighthouse gave her, she keeps coming back to one word: independence.

"I think it was mainly the independence that the Lighthouse for the Blind gave me more so than anything else," she says. "It was that independence that I needed."

But Niurka is not content to simply receive. She wants to give back. She wants to reach others who are in the same position she was in, people who have just received a diagnosis or just lost their vision and feel like the world has ended. Her message to them is direct and unwavering.

"Do not be afraid. Just keep going. Life doesn't stop there. The mountain is still there. You just got to find another way to go around it and climb it."

The Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches, Treasure Coast & Okeechobee was recently featured on Let’s Talk Charity with Sherry , where Executive Director Lisa Stella joined the program to discuss the growing need for vision services across our region and the life-changing work happening every day through Lighthouse programs.

During the conversation, Lisa shared how the Lighthouse has been serving the community for 80 years , helping individuals who are blind or visually impaired build independence, confidence, and opportunity from childhood through adulthood.

Serving Individuals “From Birth to Earth”

One of the key messages from the interview was the broad range of support the Lighthouse provides. As Lisa explained, the organization serves individuals “from birth to earth,” meaning services are available for babies, children, teens, adults, and seniors at every stage of life.

For young children, that support often begins at home. When a family learns their child has vision loss, the experience can be emotional and overwhelming. Lighthouse teachers work directly with families in their homes to help children build developmental skills, navigate their environment, and learn how to interact with the world around them in ways that support growth and independence.

Lisa emphasized that these services are not just for the child—they are also for the entire family. Parents and caregivers are given tools, guidance, and encouragement as they adjust and learn how to best support their child.

Helping Adults Rebuild Confidence After Vision Loss

Lisa shared how this technology has opened up new possibilities for clients, including translating spoken language and helping users identify food and household items.

Her message was clear: this is an exciting time for accessibility, and technology is helping create more opportunities for people with vision loss to live fully and independently.

Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches Announces 5th Annual EnVision 20/20 Luncheon

Palm Beach, FL – Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches will host its 5th Annual EnVision 20/20 Luncheon on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at The Beach Club in Palm Beach. This signature event brings together community leaders, supporters, and advocates to celebrate and empower individuals with visual impairments through essential programs and services.

With this year’s theme, “Embracing a Visionary Future for All,” the luncheon invites attendees to reflect on the progress made and the meaningful work still ahead. The afternoon will begin at 11:00 a.m. with an exclusive VIP Oceanside Chat featuring keynote speaker Lauren Bishop, Assistant State Attorney for the 15th Judicial Circuit. Guests will then enjoy a reception and teacup auction from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., offering a chance to connect with fellow attendees while bidding on a wide array of curated items and experiences.

The teenage years are a time of growth, self-discovery, and increasing independence. For teens who are blind or visually impaired, that journey can come with unique challenges—but with the right support, it can also be filled with confidence, capability, and opportunity.

At the Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches, Treasure Coast & Okeechobee, transition programs are designed to help teens build the skills they need to move successfully into adulthood—whether that means continuing their education, entering the workforce, or living more independently.

Why Independence Matters

Independence looks different for every teen, but the goal is the same: to build the skills and confidence needed to navigate the world safely and successfully. For teens with vision loss, this often means learning alternative techniques, using assistive technology, and gaining hands-on experience in real-life situations.

Meet Brandon

Brandon has a progressive eye condition and started participating in Lighthouse programs when he was six. He first participated in the Children’s Program and Summer Camp. Brandon later engaged in the Teen Program, which focused on independent living skills, career exploration, work experiences, and college prep.

Brandon recently graduated from College with a degree in Psychology and referred to the help and services he received from the Lighthouse as a great propeller to his success.

Brandon is an example of one of our clients who transitioned from one program to the next as his needs changed. He knows we are here as a resource for him--every step of the way.

Brandon’s next goal is to attend graduate school to obtain a master’s degree in Psychology.

Key Life Skills for Teens

Transition programs focus on practical, everyday skills that make a lasting impact. These may include:

Independent living skills: Cooking, cleaning, organizing, and managing personal belongings
Travel skills: Learning how to navigate safely using a white cane, public transportation, or ride services
Technology use: Using smartphones, screen readers, and other tools to access information and stay connected
Communication and self-advocacy: Speaking up for needs, asking for accommodations, and building confidence in social settings

These skills are often taught through hands-on experiences—like planning meals, shopping for groceries, or participating in group outings—so teens can practice in real-world environments.

The Role of Transition Programs

Transition programs provide structured support during a critical stage of life. Through group activities, one-on-one instruction, and community-based learning, teens gain the tools they need to become more independent.

Who Will Be Part of Your Team

A specialist might sit with you on the floor while your baby is having tummy time, guiding you in how to use your voice, texture, and contrast to encourage your child to lift their head and reach. They might observe bath time and suggest ways to build body awareness through touch and water play.

The goal is not to hand your baby off to an expert — it is to empower you as the parent to be your child’s best teacher. You are with your baby every day. The specialist is your coach, helping you see what your baby needs and building your confidence to provide it.

Milestones to Watch For (and How They May Look Different)

Developmental milestones for visually impaired babies often happen on a different timeline or in a different sequence than for sighted babies. This is not a sign of a problem — it is simply a reflection of how your child is learning about the world. Here are some things to know:

Smiling: Sighted babies often smile in response to seeing a face. Visually impaired babies may smile in response to a familiar voice or touch. If you are not getting the visual smiles you expected, try talking and singing more — you may find your baby lights up at the sound of you.
Reaching: Sighted babies often reach toward objects they can see. Visually impaired babies may not reach until they learn to associate sound with an object’s location. A specialist can work with you on “sound localization,” helping your baby understand that a rattle nearby is something worth reaching for.
Crawling and Walking: Without the motivation of seeing something across the room, visually impaired babies sometimes have less incentive to move. Early O&M strategies build that motivation through tactile exploration and safe, encouraging environments.
Language: Many visually impaired children develop strong language skills early, as they rely heavily on listening. Talk to your baby constantly — describe what you are doing, what they are touching, and where you are going.

Raised on farmland in Pahokee, Florida, Anne grew up surrounded by horses, gardens, and a close-knit family deeply rooted in agriculture. Diagnosed at age seven with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition that causes progressive vision loss, Anne learned early on that her world would look different. At the time, she didn’t know her vision wasn’t typical—she simply thought everyone saw the way she did.

The Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches, Treasure Coast, and Okeechobee is proud to participate in the 2026 Cognizant Classic Birdies for Charity program—an easy and meaningful way for supporters to help expand services for children, teens, adults, and seniors living with vision loss.

This annual PGA TOUR–aligned fundraiser brings local nonprofits together and gives donors a chance to make a direct impact while joining in a community tradition. Every gift helps the Lighthouse continue offering essential programs that build independence, confidence, skill development, and connection for individuals with visual impairments.

How the Campaign Works

From November 5, 2025 through February 25, 2026, supporters can make a pledge and submit their best guess on the number of birdies PGA TOUR players will make during the Cognizant Classic (Feb. 26–Mar. 1, 2026). A minimum donation of $20 is required to participate. Each entry supports the Lighthouse and counts toward bonus funds the tournament distributes to participating charities based on their fundraising results.

A Chance to Win $10,000

Every donor who submits a guess is automatically entered for a chance to win the $10,000 grand prize. The closest guess—without going over—wins. If multiple entries tie, a tiebreaker comes into play: How many balls will land in the water at the Bear Trap? Additional tiebreakers are used only if needed.

A Season of Giving: How One Teacher Helped Bring Thanksgiving to 50 Lighthouse Families

As the holiday season begins, the Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches is proud to shine a light on an act of generosity that touched the hearts of dozens of local families. This year, 50 Lighthouse families will enjoy a full Thanksgiving meal thanks to a project led by one person whose dedication continues to ripple outward—Teacher of Blind Babies, Nicole Isaacson .

What began as a simple wish to support families in need evolved into a community-wide effort that resulted in 100 Thanksgiving bags —50 full meal bags and 50 dessert bags—along with a $25 gift card for each family to purchase their turkey. Even more inspiring, this entire project was coordinated outside of Nicole’s working hours.

How a Community Came Together

Nicole’s effort wasn’t just an organized drive—it was a heartfelt movement powered by personal connections. When asked how she managed to bring so many people on board, she shared that this year’s support “came together through a mix of community connections and people simply wanting to make a difference.”

Her mother played a key role by rallying neighbors in the Cresswind community, especially the Cresswind Women’s Club. “Once they began collecting, word spread… and soon everyone wanted to take part—whether it was filling a complete Thanksgiving bag, donating food, or contributing a gift card.”

Many organizations and local businesses offered support as well. Friends, neighbors, and colleagues filled in every gap until every item needed for 100 bags was accounted for.

The Planning Behind the Project

This was the second year Nicole organized the Thanksgiving food bags, and planning began months in advance. Throughout the summer and early fall, she quietly shared the project with family, friends, and community groups. Interest grew quickly.

By October, things accelerated. The Cresswind Women’s Club hosted two packing nights—assembling 50 bags each night. Even an unexpected challenge didn’t slow the group down: “On our first packing night my mother’s air conditioning stopped working. It was warm, but the women stayed focused… Some even tried to fix the unit before getting right back to work.”

By the end of October, all 100 bags were neatly organized and ready for Lighthouse families.

What Each Family Received

Nicole wanted each family to receive everything needed for a full, comforting holiday meal. Every bag included:

Fall-themed kitchen towel
Autumn potholder
$25 gift card for a turkey
Handmade craft turkey attached to the gift card

Inside the food bags were the staples of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner:

Corn, green beans, yams
Stuffing mix, gravy, cranberry sauce
Macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes
Cornbread mix, marshmallows

The dessert bags included:

Pumpkin pie filling
Evaporated milk
Ready-to-use pie shell
Brownie mix

Families also received French fried onions and cream of mushroom soup to complete the classic green bean casserole.

For Nicole, the project is about far more than food. She says she hopes people understand “just how special the families at the Lighthouse truly are.” Many face unique challenges, and a gesture like this ensures that the holidays feel a little brighter and a little easier.

She added something that captures the heart of the entire project:
“The joy on the faces of the women packing the bags was just as meaningful as the joy the families will feel when they receive them.”

This simple truth reminds us that kindness lifts everyone involved.

Nicole’s Thanksgiving project has quickly become a tradition, and the support grows stronger each year. She hopes to continue the effort in future seasons and possibly expand to other holidays as well.

The Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches honors the life and legacy of Maria Beaudouin , a remarkable woman whose generosity and compassion touched countless lives.

Maria’s journey began in the picturesque southwestern region of Austria, near the Italian border. In 1951, she moved to the United States, eventually making Palm Beach her home for the past 45 years. Her life was filled with global experiences, having lived in New York, Texas, Washington D.C., Lebanon, and Bahrain.

Maria’s professional career included a distinguished role with Pan American World Airways in New York City, where she managed VIP flight arrangements with grace and precision. Her warmth and elegance left a lasting impression on all who worked with her.

Her commitment to philanthropy was evident in every aspect of her life. Through her dear friend, Mrs. Roshan Massoumi, Maria became deeply involved with the Lighthouse for the Blind. Alongside Page Ferrell, she helped create the annual Envision 20/20 Luncheon , which has become a cornerstone event for the organization. Maria’s unwavering support as the luncheon’s most generous annual sponsor reflected her belief in the Lighthouse’s mission to empower individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

Maria’s generosity extended far beyond the Lighthouse. She was a devoted supporter of the Society of the Four Arts, the Norton Museum, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, two Indian schools in the Dakotas, and the Salvation Army. Her philanthropic spirit and dedication to community service were truly extraordinary.

Maria’s life was also marked by resilience and faith. After the passing of her beloved husband, John Tyrell Beaudouin, she found joy and companionship with Montague Cooper, sharing over 12 happy years together.

Last month, we had the privilege of welcoming students from the Keiser University Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program into one of our Meta AI training sessions. Diving into Discovery at The Florida Aquarium

Last month, our Lighthouse teens embarked on an unforgettable journey to The Florida Aquarium in Tampa. This self-guided adventure allowed them to explore diverse marine habitats and observe fascinating species at their own pace. From colorful coral reefs to mesmerizing sea creatures, the experience was both educational and awe-inspiring.

Field trips like these not only broaden horizons but also provide opportunities for our kids to connect with the natural world in meaningful ways. The smiles and excitement we saw that day were the true highlights of the trip!

Hands-On Learning at FIMC-VI

During their Tampa visit, Lighthouse teens also had the chance to gain work experience at FIMC-VI (Florida Instructional Materials Center for the Visually Impaired).

At FIMC-VI, students learned how accessible instructional materials—such as braille, large print, and digital formats—are created and distributed to support visually impaired students across Florida. They also explored the behind-the-scenes efforts that go into teacher training, maintaining loan libraries, and developing resources for students with vision loss.

This visit showcased the vital role FIMC-VI plays in making education accessible and equitable, inspiring our kids to think about the possibilities in their own futures.

A Paw-sitive Experience at Dogs, Inc.

On July 22 , our kids paid a visit to Dogs, Inc. (formerly Southeastern Guide Dogs), where they discovered how guide and service dogs are transforming lives.

Dogs, Inc. is the only organization in North America that provides guide and service dogs, lifetime alumni support, premium dog food, and preventative veterinary care—all at no cost. They even offer financial assistance for unexpected veterinary expenses, ensuring that love, hope, and independence remain accessible to all.

Our kids were inspired by the dedication and care that goes into training these incredible dogs, and they left with a greater appreciation for the powerful bond between guide dogs and their handlers.

Accessibility at Olive Garden: Small Changes, Big Impact

Dining out should be a joyful experience for everyone, and accessible menus are a simple yet meaningful way to make that happen. Restaurants like Olive Garden are leading by example, offering large-print menus that allow individuals with visual impairments to independently enjoy their meal selections.

While in Tampa, our teens explored the innovative accessibility solutions offered by the University of South Florida (USF) .

USF provides a virtual tour of its Tampa campus with 360-degree panoramic views and student-led narration—an incredibly helpful tool for blind and visually impaired students. Even more impressive, a USF engineering graduate student developed a 3D tactile mapping system that uses plastic symbols to represent campus features. This system allows visually impaired students to create their own maps, aiding navigation of classrooms, emergency exits, and evacuation routes.

This visit reminded us how technology and innovation can break down barriers and open doors to greater independence, especially in educational settings.

Celebrating Community and Style with Dress for Success

August kicked off with a burst of fun and empowerment during the Palm Beach Focus Club’s indoor picnic ! From a delicious southern-style meal to lively games of dominoes and beachball volleyball, the event was packed with laughter and connection.

Arizona Diamondbacks Introduce Tactile Broadcast for Blind and Visually Impaired Fans

For decades, baseball has been known as America’s pastime—but until now, not every fan could fully experience it. That’s changing thanks to the Arizona Diamondbacks, who just became the first Major League Baseball team to offer a tactile broadcast system for blind and visually impaired fans.

Through a partnership with Seattle-based startup OneCourt , the Diamondbacks are introducing a device that turns real-time MLB tracking data into vibrations and tactile feedback , allowing fans to literally feel the game. The device, a tablet featuring a tactile baseball field and strike zone, offers fans the ability to follow every pitch, hit, and play through touch, combined with audio prompts via headphones.

Five devices are now available—at no cost—on a first-come, first-served basis at the Section 128 Guest Relations Center during every home game.

Helping Kids See a Brighter Future – Vision Screenings at Caridad Center

On Saturday, June 14th, Lighthouse staff joined the team at Caridad Center in Boynton Beach for a free community vision screening event focused on children. In just one day, we screened 59 kids, with 37% referred for further care due to detected vision concerns.

Many of these children had never had an eye exam before. Some were found to have significant refractive errors—which, if left untreated, could have resulted in permanent vision issues. Thanks to our Early Intervention and Children’s Programs, families were connected to the next steps in care and support.

This event demonstrates why early detection is critical. A simple screening can literally change the trajectory of a child’s life—and your donations help us deliver these services to the families who need them most.

Enriching Cultural Experiences – Kravis Center Performance

On June 28th, our Palm Beach Activity Club members attended a performance of Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. From the music to the energy in the room, it was a night to remember.

Thanks to descriptive audio services and thoughtful accommodations by the Kravis Center staff, our clients enjoyed a fully immersive experience. Access to the arts is an important part of our mission to foster independence, joy, and inclusion. These outings help visually impaired individuals engage with their community in meaningful ways—experiencing music, movement, and culture with confidence.

Finding Balance Through Yoga – Wellness at Yoga Journey

Mindfulness and physical wellness go hand in hand. Our Palm Beach Activity Club continued its commitment to healthy living with a chair yoga session at Yoga Journey in Boca Raton. Under the guidance of instructors Lisa and Ruth, participants practiced mindfulness, gentle movement, and breathing exercises—supported by descriptive instruction tailored to their needs.

Together, we build a foundation that supports the child’s growth and prepares them for a future full of possibilities.

We also offer free vision screenings for children aged 6 months to 6 years at local preschools, daycares, and community events. These screenings can detect early eye conditions—such as refractive errors or other visual impairments—that might otherwise go unnoticed until it's too late to correct. A five-minute screening can change a child’s life.

Early detection and treatment are vital. Delays in support can lead to permanent vision loss. If you know a child under six who hasn’t been screened, don’t wait .

Children’s Program: Ages 6 to 14

Our Children’s Program continues the journey for kids ages 6 to 14 across Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee counties. This year-round program incorporates education, recreation, and skill-building through interactive activities, camps, and outings.

From learning how to use assistive technology to navigating new environments independently, these children gain tools that empower them for the future. They practice:

A Powerful Conversation on AI's Role in Transit

This engaging session addressed the growing momentum behind artificial intelligence (AI) within public transit operations. Rather than discussing AI in abstract terms, the panel focused on real-world applications—highlighting how AI is already transforming fleet management, maintenance, routing, and rider communication.

Iris and Larry Gardner, long-time clients of the Lighthouse, know what it means to live with vision loss. But rather than let their circumstances define them, they chose to find strength in their journey—and each other. The couple arrived for a routine check-up, hands gently clasped, and hearts open.

In the waiting room, they overheard a conversation between an elderly woman and a receptionist. The woman, clearly frustrated, shared that she couldn’t afford a special pair of glasses that her insurance wouldn’t cover. “What’s the point of having partial vision if I can’t make the most of it?” she asked, her voice tinged with defeat.

Reflections on a Beautiful Day: The 2025 EnVision 20/20 Luncheon

On a picture-perfect day in Palm Beach, with sunlight glinting off the water and yachts gently swaying in the marina, guests gathered at a beautiful yacht club for the Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches’ annual EnVision 20/20 Luncheon . The setting was serene, the mood joyful, and the mission clear: to support individuals living with vision loss in achieving independence and opportunity.

A Warm Welcome and a Powerful Program

From the moment guests arrived, they were met with heartfelt hospitality—valet attendants, palm-lined walkways, champagne toasts, and the warm smiles of Lighthouse team members. The day began at 11:00 a.m. with a VIP Meet & Greet hosted by Sherlock Washington —entrepreneur, Paralympic athlete, and lifelong advocate for the blind. His gracious presence and inspiring story set the tone for an uplifting afternoon.

At 11:30 a.m., the Champagne and Teacup Auction opened with over 75 exciting packages donated by local businesses, ranging from fine dining and spa experiences to unique getaways. Guests bid generously, knowing that each dollar raised would fuel critical services for our community.

Leadership, Gratitude, and Recognition

Executive Director Lisa Stella welcomed attendees with a message of gratitude and purpose, highlighting the Lighthouse’s commitment to empowering individuals with vision loss. The energy in the room was one of shared hope and heartfelt support.

One of the most meaningful moments came during the David B. Cano, M.D. Servitude Award presentation, honoring two pillars in the Lighthouse community, Dr. Scott Gartner and Blanca Gartner . Their compassion and unwavering support exemplify the Lighthouse spirit and continue to inspire others to serve.

Inspiration Through Music and Storytelling

Guests were then treated to a stunning musical performance by Islay Rodriguez , a seasoned guitarist known for blending flamenco, jazz, and pop into captivating instrumental pieces. His music filled the room with emotion, elevating the day’s spirit.

Following the music, Sherlock Washington took the stage again to deliver an Inspirational Address that left a lasting impression. Diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at age seven, Sherlock has spent his life breaking down barriers for the blind and visually impaired. His words were a powerful reminder that inclusion, empowerment, and advocacy must be part of our daily mission.

To close the event, Allen Preston delivered a stirring Call to the Heart, inviting guests to deepen their support for Lighthouse and its mission to provide independence and opportunity for those with vision loss.

Among the afternoon’s many unforgettable moments, one stood out to longtime supporter Roshan Massoumi , one of our valued supporters and the event’s Valet Underwriter:

“The moment of greatest excitement and emotional impact came when Carmencita took the podium. With her graceful presence and confident delivery, she spoke eloquently—and then revealed to the audience that she is a client of the Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Her authenticity and poise truly moved the room. Carmencita is not only a compelling speaker but also a remarkable ambassador for the Lighthouse mission.”

The community support on the island of Palm Beach was evident in the donations to the Auction of 2025 we were excited by their participation and giving us the publicity we were hoping to receive."

Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches Extends Reach to Support the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee County

Port St. Lucie, FL — March 26, 2025 — Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches is expanding its reach with the launch of a new satellite presence: Lighthouse for the Blind of the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee. While the new mailing address is located at 9126 S US Hwy 1, #2013, Port St. Lucie, FL 34952, services are primarily delivered through a mobile team, virtual programs, and strategic community partnerships.

This expansion aims to bring essential services to individuals who are blind or visually impaired in St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River, and Okeechobee Counties—ensuring access to high-quality support, no matter where they live.

“We’re excited to bring our mission further north and increase awareness and access to vision rehabilitation across the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee,” said Lisa Stella , Executive Director of Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches. “Our goal is to meet people where they are—whether that’s online, in the community, at their home or at a local partner site.”

Lighthouse for the Blind has already begun forging strong ties in the area. In collaboration with Indian River State College, the organization is launching a new in-person Independent Living Skills group class starting April 1st at the college’s Pruitt Campus in Port St. Lucie. The class will be led by Ashley Nieuwendam, one of Lighthouse’s experienced Vision Rehabilitation Therapists.

Lighthouse of the Blind for the Palm Beaches is now fully accessible to people who are blind and visually impaired. With the implementation of the RightHear system, the Lighthouse reaffirms its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, always striving to ensure that all visitors can have the most independent and equitable experience possible.

The RightHear system offers a user-friendly experience, empowering individuals with visual impairments to explore and engage with their surroundings seamlessly. Upon entering the premises, users can easily access audio instructions and directions through their smartphones, guiding them to key points of interest in our office. The information can be delivered in up to 26 languages, ensuring that the solution meets the needs of the diverse and cosmopolitan nature of the Lighthouse.

Key features of the RightHear system at Lighthouse of the Blind for the Palm Beaches include:

Real-Time Audio Assistance: The RightHear mobile app, available for both iOS and Android, provides users with real-time audio guidance and information about the location they are in in our office.

Congratulations to six Lighthouse clients who graduated last month from the Recipes for Success culinary certificate program! These talented individuals, who are visually impaired or blind, have gained the skills and confidence to pursue meaningful careers in the culinary industry.

Equipped with newly crafted resumes and job readiness training from their classes at Recipes for Success, they are prepared to showcase their skills to local restaurants and hotels eager to hire.

Throughout their training, our clients not only learned practical culinary techniques but also developed teamwork and problem-solving abilities that will serve them well in any professional environment. From mastering kitchen safety to creating delicious dishes, their journey has been one of growth and determination.

A special moment from the program was capturing the students proudly standing in front of a vibrant mural, symbolizing their bright future. Another highlight was watching them in action—working side by side in the kitchen, demonstrating their culinary talents with precision and passion.

Palm Beach County Optometric Association's September Meeting

Our team was at it again when our Executive Director, Lisa Stella, MBA , and longtime partner and friend of the Lighthouse, Dr. Scott Gartner of Low Vision Services, spoke at the Palm Beach County Optometric Association's September meeting!

A big thank you to Dr. Sara Rasekhi, Palm Beach County Optometric Association President, and Dr. Adam Ramsey from Socialite Vision for inviting Lisa to speak with 50 local Optometrists about the services the Lighthouse provides to visually impaired babies, children, teens, adults, and the older blind in Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee counties.

Dr. Scott Gartner highlighted the importance of Low Vision Services and encouraged Optometrists to refer patients to him so they can collaborate as a team to maximize the usability of each patient’s remaining vision for a happier, more fulfilling life. He emphasized that a strong diagnosis, paired with Lighthouse services, can be truly life-changing for individuals with vision loss. Additionally, Dr. Gartner demonstrated some of the latest assistive technology designed to enhance independence, mobility, and quality of life for those who are visually impaired.

The special guest speaker of the evening was Dr. Peter A. Pham, an ophthalmologist from Tomball, Texas, with expertise in glaucoma surgery and the treatment of cataracts and other conditions. Dr. Pham, who is also a biochemist, shared his personal struggle with dry eye, which led him to discover the healing benefits of okra and develop the Zocular product line.

Although Zocular was originally created for eye ailments, participants at the event were invited to try the sample gel on painful areas (many opted for their knees) and check back 20 minutes later. The response was overwhelmingly positive! This unique experience added an exciting touch to the evening.

Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches is thrilled to announce that WE WON a Golden Palm Award at the South Florida Tech Hub’s Golden Palm Awards! Even more exciting, we were honored in a newly created category inspired by our work: the Tech Doing Good Award!

The South Florida Tech Hub highlighted our efforts on their site, stating:

"A brand new category and surprise award, this organization truly has harnessed the power of tech to create a positive impact on society, providing independence for the blind and visually impaired. They run various programs and services, two of which are the Assistive Technologies and Vocational Rehabilitation programs. We celebrate their commitment to creating a better world through technological advancement, and we are inspired by their dedication to making a difference."

The award ceremony was held at the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, where Lighthouse proudly served as a sponsor for the event. Representing our organization were Vice Chair Carmencita Mitchell, Team Member Diane Salina, and our Executive Director Lisa Stella, MBA, who accepted the award on our behalf. Adding to the excitement, Lisa surprised South Florida Tech Hub’s CEO, Nikki Cabus, with a Blind Barbie from Mattel, Inc., created in partnership with The American Foundation for the Blind.

1. Online Giving : Visit the Cognizant Classic Birdies for Charity website and select Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches as your charity. Make your guess, complete your donation securely, and you’re all set. All online gifts are collected by PGA TOUR Charities, Inc.

2. Cash or Check : Prefer to give directly? Simply fill out the Manual Donation Form, include your guess and donation, and submit it to the Lighthouse office. We’ll enter your submission and ensure it’s counted.
